3 weeks in asia: part 2.3

day five we took a ferry to lancau.

once we arrived at lancau we took a bus near the top of the island to the ngong ping village.  it wasn't really a village, but a bunch of expensive tourist shops.  we ate some lunch there.

then made our way to the tian tan: big buddha.  it's the largest outdoor buddha in the world.

some serious hard hats.

there is some serious money being thrown around up here on construction.

you could hike to the highest point on the island, but we didn't as we didn't really have enough time, but this was spot was near the beginning of the trail.

adjacent to the big buddha is the po lin monastery and temple.

yeah, we took the ngong ping skyrail which i wasn't super thrilled about, but as how it's been the past few times i've faced heights, i just said i could only be here once, fuck it.  it wouldn't have been that bad of a ride, if it wasn't for the people riding with standing up and moving around the whole time.

we took the subway back to kowloon and had some good pizza and beer.

that night there was some kind of opening ceremony that involved fireworks for the 2009 east asian games that were being held in hong kong.

after another late night of drinking, the fire alarm starts going off at 8:54am in the chungking mansion.  after they figured out that it was just a false alarm, we decided to just pack our stuff and head for the airport, it wasn't worth going back to sleep.

one of the boots that i bought only for this trip blew out the second day in hong kong, only one week after beginning the trip.  duct tape didn't exist, but i found some electric tape the night before, but it came off as soon as we arrived in bangkok later that night.
