3 weeks in asia: part 4.1

continuing day 18 of the trip, this is the first view of cambodia.  we still had to walk through one more checkpoint before official being in the country, but this was the start.

we took a long bus ride from the border to siem reap.  there was one stop in the middle of nowhere at some restaurant, which i would guess only had business from the buses that stopped there.  it worked great. they said this is a 30 minute stop, but of course half the people on the bus decided that they were going to order food, so we ended up being there for over an hour.  i didn't eat, i was ready to go and there wasn't a damn thing around, but it did give me another opportunity to use korean.  i had a fairly good conversation with a korean man who was catching a ride as well.

the bus finally arrived in siem reap around 5:30pm, but it took us to 'their' guest house.  it was funny to watch the people at the guest house taking everyone's luggage inside and people couldn't do anything about it.  daniel and i had kept our bags with us in the cabin, so we hit the streets on foot to find somewhere better.  we ended up at the angkor guest house - nethsocheata.  it was quite nice.  after getting showers we went to the restaurant that they also had.  geckos everywhere and delicious khmer food.

i woke up the next morning around 4:30am with a really tight chest and having a hard time breathing.  i soon started hyperventilating.  hindsight i think that i was already hyperventilating as soon as i woke.  daniel got up and got the guy working downstairs to get an ambulance.  the doctor or medical person that showed up was able to get me to slow my breathing, but my destiny was the hospital.  i think they gave some liquid xanax and pumped me full of fluids for a few hours.  after passing out for a few hours while they did all of the tests to see what was going on, they let me go and told me that i was dehydrated, confirmed my tonsillitis, had had a panic attack, but had no definite reason as to why (possibly indigestion had caused the chest tightness), gave me some drugs and told me to take it easy and come back the next day for a follow up.  the medical staff all had great english, which i was thankful for and though this was an expense i wasn't prepared for, it didn't break the bank and i was thankful that this had not taken place in the states where i wouldn't be able to pay for it.  one of the hospital staff gave us a ride back to our guest house so we didn't have to get a cab, which was super nice.  upon coming back i took a nice nap.

at this point it was a little late, but first thing on the agenda was to get a meal.  this banana pizza was fucking great.

after our meal we got a tuk tuk to take us to angkor wat. we got a three day pass, which is the cost of two independent days.

since we had gotten a late start, angkor wat was the only thing we got to see, but we were ok with that.
